Situation Analysis of Drivers of Zero Dose Children and State-Specific Socio-Behavioural Drivers of Vaccine Demand and Uptake in Nigeria

Project type: Research study

Project design: Qualitative study

Duration: May – December 2021

Project location(s): SW – Oyo; SS – Bayelsa; SE; Abia/Ebonyi; NW: Kano; NE – Bauchi, NC – Kogi

Project description:

This study employed a systematic approach to understand the full range of socio-behavioural drivers of zero dose, vaccine demand and uptake. The conceptual framework was based on a combination of WHO’s Increasing Vaccination Model (IVM) and the UNICEF Journey to Immunization frameworks. While the IVM assessed the behavioral and social drivers (BeSD) of vaccine uptake, the journey framework was used to map caregivers’ barriers and bottlenecks to vaccination uptake from getting informed to receiving them and completing their vaccination.

Aim: This study aimed to identify and understand context-specific barriers to un-immunization. It used the evidence generated to develop human-centred design (HCD) strategies and communication plans to address the barriers identified and share the process with other states.
