Missed Opportunities for Vaccination Equity (MOVE)

Project design: Intervention study

Duration: July 2019 – July 2020

Project location(s): Kano

Project description:

MOVE was an intervention study that used human-centered design to develop, implement and evaluate interventions to reduce missed opportunities for vaccinations among hospitalized children in Kano Nigeria. The project targeted hospitalized children because they are vulnerable to poor health outcomes, but also within easy access of the healthcare system. The intervention engaged key stakeholders through a combination of sensitization of children’s caregivers and health workers, digital data capture and re-purposed immunization resources.

The MOVE intervention used the human-centered design (HCD) approach to optimize hospital processes and improve childhood vaccination. It had three components:

  1. inpatient in-reach, where MOVE staff check immunization records and inform hospital personnel of missing vaccines.
  2. immunization service linkage to inpatient care, which ensures that vaccines are available and provides a vaccination schedule at discharge.
  3. community outreach to provide follow-up reminders and education.
