The BMGF-funded Strengthening Training for EPI and PHC in Nigeria (STEP-IN) project is a capacity development pilot project that is being implemented in three states in Nigeria; Bauchi, Niger and Rivers. The project aims to improve the quality of the EPI and PHC workforce by institutionalizing and strengthening capacity development for frontline health officers and managers.
Specifically, this project will develop, implement, and evaluate a novel training approach that builds and maintains a cohort of core trainers whose primary engagement is teaching in universities, schools of health technology and of nursing. In this way, STEP-IN will shift the paradigm on capacity building from an ad hoc, convenience-driven approach towards a sustainable, institutionalized and quality-driven model, thereby ensuring governments’ and partners’ investments in health worker training is optimized.
