Do you know about immunization? Have your children been immunized? Do you know the importance of immunizing your children in a timely and complete manner?
For most of us, the answer to this line of questioning is an absolute ‘Yes, of course!’ After all, we all know and sang the popular jingle – ‘prevention is better than cure, come immunize your pikin.’
However, those of us who have gone through that immunization process with our children know that it’s not that simple. Immunization has a timetable and it is not easy to keep up. Our daily schedules are filled with a lot of domestic chores and activities, including our jobs and other errands that may pop up. The list of things we need to remember goes on and on. It is no surprise that we might not remember that immunization visit/appointment we booked for our children 4 or 6 weeks ago.
As difficult as keeping to the immunization timetable is, one thing is clear – the benefit far outweighs the consequences of not immunizing our children. Immunization protects our children from common vaccine preventable diseases like tuberculosis, hepatitis B, poliomyelitis, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, Haemophilus Influenza type b (Hib), pneumococcal diseases, measles and yellow fever. It is safe and most effective when administered at the right (scheduled) time. Therefore, to achieve maximum protection against these vaccine preventable diseases, our children should receive all vaccines within the recommended intervals.
